George Washington Carver Academy is hiring a Behavior Intervention Paraprofessional to join the team.

Job Summary

The Behavior Intervention Paraprofessional is responsible for supporting students with behavioral, social-emotional, and academic needs by implementing behavior intervention strategies and fostering a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment. This position works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and student support staff to reinforce positive behaviors, promote student success, and support the implementation of individualized behavior plans. The Behavior Intervention Paraprofessional helps students develop the skills necessary to achieve success in the classroom and throughout the school community.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

  • Provide direct support to students with behavioral, social-emotional, and academic needs in classroom and school settings.
  • Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), positive behavior support strategies, and other individualized interventions under the direction of certified staff.
  • Assist students in developing self-regulation, conflict resolution, communication, and appropriate social skills.
  • Support students individually and in small groups to reinforce academic instruction and behavioral expectations.
  • Monitor student behavior and collect behavioral data to support intervention planning and progress monitoring.
  • Assist with crisis prevention, de-escalation, and intervention strategies using approved district procedures and training.
  • Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, school counselors, social workers, behavior specialists, and administrators to support student success.
  • Reinforce classroom routines, expectations, and school-wide behavior initiatives such as PBIS or MTSS.
  • Supervise students during classroom instruction, transitions, lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, field trips, and other school activities.
  • Prepare instructional materials and assist with classroom organization as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with FERPA and school policies.
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504, and other student support meetings as assigned.
  • Participate in school activities, meetings, professional development, and required behavior intervention training.
  • Maintain effective communication with students, parents (as directed), and school staff.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.

Cognitive Demands:

  • Supervision of multiple students with varying behavioral and academic needs.
  • Implementing behavior intervention plans and positive behavior support strategies.
  • Maintaining a calm, structured, and supportive learning environment.
  • Monitoring and documenting student behaviors with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Exercising sound judgment during challenging or crisis situations.
  • Adapting to changing student needs and classroom priorities.
  • Participating in continuous professional development.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and move throughout the school day.
  • Occasionally lift, transfer, or assist students and/or move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Assist with student supervision during indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Respond appropriately to behavioral crises, including utilizing approved physical intervention techniques when trained and authorized.
  • Withstand moderate to high noise levels in classroom and school environments.
  • Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or college coursework in education, psychology, social work, child development, special education, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children or adolescents exhibiting behavioral, emotional, or social challenges preferred.
  • Knowledge of positive behavior interventions, classroom management strategies, and trauma-informed practices preferred.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention), Safety-Care, or other approved de-escalation/restraint certification preferred or willingness to obtain if required.
  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional in challenging situations.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, families, and student support staff.
  • Ability to meet all applicable state, district, and school employment requirements, including successful completion of required background checks.
