FORESTRY TECHNICIAN (PERMANENT INTERMITTENT) / NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT/ NATURAL RESOURCES / FORT HUMBOLDT STATE HISTORIC PARK

The reporting location is 3431 Fort Ave Eureka, CA,95503. Under the close supervision of the  Staff Park and Recreation Specialist. T he incumbent will work on a variety  of vegetation program functions and support the District Resource Management Program by assisting  with the implementation of resource restoration projects. L ead botanical surveys and perform vegetation monitoring,  assist with plant propagation and planting, invasive species removal and prescribed fire monitoring.  Incumbents entering State service at this level will receive in a timely manner during the probationary  period, training in the Department's "Basic Fire Fighter" training as is required for Fire Fighter II. Assists contractors (California Conservation  Corps, Cal Fire, and other types of work crews) to adhere to the restoration prescriptions, best  management practices, and conditions of environmental permits as stipulated by contract.

Occasional travel and overnight stay throughout the district may be required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

This position may work up to 1500 hours per year.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Employee must attend (at employer’s expense) and pass Basic Firefighter training within 12 months of hire and must pass, within 1 month, the fire community's standardized Moderate Pack Test (Requirements: 2-mile walk with 25 lb. pack in 30 minutes. No jogging or running).

Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license is required. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Per California Code of Regulations (CCR) , this is a sensitive position, and therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing. It should be noted that testing is not mandatory, but is allowed to be conducted only if and when there is a determination of reasonable suspicion as defined in CCR .

Working Conditions

Physical work outdoors in various weather conditions. During prescribed fire operations employee will be exposed to smoke and heat and may be required to work long hours and weekends/holidays. As safety allows, work continues in all types of weather. Lift heavy loads. working in steep terrain, navigating through areas of thick brush, through standing and fallen timber. May be required to camp out up to 3 nights per week.

Special Requirements

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Thorough knowledge of coastal northern California flora and vegetation types, be able to identify plant species using  dichotomous keys and maintain field notes. Possess excellent field navigation skills, and and familiarity  with electronic data collection (Field Maps/ArcMap/ArcPro). Work well as an individual and in a multidisciplinary  team setting.
