Position is located in West Sacramento, Yolo County.

Under the general direction of the Business Taxes Administrator II, the Business Taxes Administrator I provides direct supervision to investigation units within the Southern and Northern Regions of the Tax Investigations Bureau’s Criminal Investigations Section. The role supports efforts to deter fraud and tax evasion and to enhance compliance across all programs administered by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA). Core responsibilities include overseeing the identification of tax evasion activities, directing criminal tax evasion investigations, coordinating the service of search warrants, presenting cases and complaints to prosecutorial agencies, and providing testimony in court proceedings. This position carries limited peace officer status.

Travel will be required at least fifty percent 50% of the time, at times throughout the state.

Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for partial telework for eligible candidates residing in California. All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change.

Currently, per the California Budget Act of 2025, all California Department of Tax and Fee Administration salaries are subject to the provisions of the State of California’s Personal Leave Program.

Working Conditions

  • Position may be located in a high-rise building.

In addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications for the CLASSIFICATION, competition is limited to individuals who meet at least one of the following promotional examination criteria:

  • Have a permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA, or
  • Are current or former employees of the legislature for 2 or more years as defined in Government Code 18990, or
  • Are current or former non-elected exempt employees of the executive branch for 2 or more consecutive years as defined in Govt. Code 18992, or
  • Are persons retired from the United States military honorably discharged from active duty with a service disability or honorably discharged from active duty as defined in Government Code 18991. Applicants must provide a copy of discharge papers (DD 214) for verification purposes at the time of application.
